Product Description
Ishqiya is a story of romance between individuals caught in a web of crime, suspense, passion, and deceit. Two thieves, Khalujan and Babban, are on the run from their boss, Mushtaq. They seek refuge with an old friend, and instead meet his widow, Krishna. As they plan their escape, their time spent together draws the duo to her, Khalu with his tinted vision of old-fashioned love, and Babban with his lustful eye. The threat of imminent death forces them on a path of violence and betrayal. Set in a rural landscape, Ishqiya explores basic human emotions as influenced by desire, greed and revenge.

5 out of 5 stars Gem of a movie!   March 8, 2010

I'm not sure why Vishal Bhardwaj is listed as the director - I understood he has produced the movie and it's been directed by Abhishek Chaubey.

I was delighted by this movie. It's whacky, funny, earthy and unpredictable. It's very pleasing that the new breed of Bollywood movie-makers have mastered the art of making superb music and using it as a hook. On the other hand, they don't show the actors and actresses themselves breaking into song and dance and jumping around trees! One of the numbers, "Dil To Baccha Hai" (I think it's been composed by Vishal Bhardwaj) is simply wonderful. I've heard it many times over.

We expect Nasiruddin Shah to perform magnificently, and he doesn't let us down. But Vidya Balan and Arshad Warsi have put in great performances as well. The guy who plays the role of the don hunting M/s Shah and Warsi is great. I actually thought he was Tinu Anand until I read later that he's a legendary Pakistani actor.

The use of old Bollywood songs at appropriate points brought a smile to my face. Especially an oldie RD Burman song, "Dhanno ki ankhon mein". The dialogue is great. And the one erotic sequence is actually smoking hot.

I thought there were a few minor raw edges in the storyline - but this is a movie with a heart and I was happy to overlook them.

Definitely not recommended for people below sixteen (because of the language) but if you're mature and open-minded this is a great movie!! If you are not Indian, I guess a lot of the angles will be lost in translation. But I would still highly recommend this movie over many other bigger names from Bollywood.

4 out of 5 stars A Bollywood Noir   June 30, 2010
Amit Talpade (New York)
Many of the great films in the last few years have been made by directors who are new and promise to infuse new life in to the story telling factory i.e. Bollywood. Dibakar Bannerjee (Khosla ka Ghosla), Neeraj Pandey ( A Wednesday) Raj Kumar Gupta ( Aamir) and Anurag Kashyap( Black Friday) and Ayaan Mukherji (Wake up Sid) are examples of accomplished young directors who have entered Bollywoood and are slowly rewriting its rules. I welcome its newest member Abhishek Chaubey who directs Ishqiya.
Ishqiya is a fresh take on the love triangle story with a crime story in the background. KhaluJaan (Naseeruddin Shah) and Babban (Arshad Warsi) are small town con men on the run from the boss after stealing some money from him. They stop at an old friend's house but their friend has passed away. Instead they meet his widow ( Vidya Balan) The widow is quite a manipulator and soon both fall for her charms. The widow soon hatches a scheme to make money and it includes kidnapping a steel merchant. Ofcourse the plan goes haywire and soon everyone suffers the consequences.
I have heard people complaining it to Apaloosa but the story lines are not similar the only thing common between the two films is the role of the conniving woman.
Ishqiya has been breathtaking shot in Wai, Satara distirct Maharashtra and in Uttar Pradesh. India looks so different through the eyes of these young directors. The landscape is lush and barren at the same time. The rural vista is simply beautiful and makes you nostalgic about India. Kudos to Mohana Krishna.
I liked the music but does not compare to Maachis or Omkaara however the track Dil to Baccha Hai is superb.
The acting accolades go to Nasseruddin Shah as the music trivia loving thief, Arshad Warsi as a lustful oaf and Vidya Balan as their wicked nemesis for believable performances. There are also many side actors and all act well.
On the whole Ishquiya is a great film and could have been a noir classic if the second half was tighter and the end satisfying. I five it four stars 6/18/10
