Must See September 25, 2009 Jennifer Hopfinger (Chicago, IL, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Smart, funny, and expertly crafted, this modern masala weaves together six love stories. Each is stylistically distinct and focuses on a different challenge that couples face. The happily married Ashutosh (played by John Abraham) and Tehzeeb (Vidya Balan) overcome family disapproval because of their religious differences but then face an even greater test when tragedy befalls them. Middle-age couple Vinay (Anil Kapoor) and Seema (Juhi Chawla) grapple with boredom and infidelity. Shiven (Akshaye Khanna) gets cold feet before his wedding to Gia (Ayesha Takia). Taxi driver Raju (Govinda) falls in love with an American woman (Shannon Esra) while helping her find the Indian lover who dumped her. Newlyweds Ram (Sohail Khan) and Phoolwati (Isha Koppikar) have a hilariously difficult time trying to consummate their marriage. Each story in this grand multistarrer delivers, but the best one is that of B-list starlet Kamini (Priyanka Chopra) and mystery-man Rahul (Salman Khan), who stage a fake romance as a publicity stunt and find true love in the process. - The Bollywood Ticket: The American guide to Indian movies (http://www.thebollywoodticket.com) Subscribe: The Bollywood Ticket
Really enjoyed this one February 4, 2009 Lyn (Melbourne Australia) The photos on the cover of this DVD made me unclear whether this was to be a serious modern drama like "Life in a Metro". I found that it is modern but very much in keeping with light Bollywood offerings.
It has a very strong cast who all do well. We have Priyanka Chopra as a rising movie star and Salman Khan planning a publicity stunt romance. They were doing some enjoyable light comedy with good timing and I would have liked even more of this section (I usually can take or leave Salman Khan but I thought he was really good in this); Anil Kapoor (as midlife husband flirting with an affair. He is always such a good actor) & Juhi Chawla (his wife), Akshaye Khanna (doing a convincing job as a commitmentphobe) & Ayesha Takia as his girlfriend; John Abraham (who started as nothing much early in the movie but got much stronger as it went) & Vidya Balan (as his wife) and Govinda & Shannon Esra (as his non-Indian love interest.
It is six interweaving stories of romance that are varying in their degrees of 'reality' but all reveal different perspectives and truth about the romances involved.
The music stands out for me with 2 big memorable songs (that I downloaded) and some good big dance sequences. It is well directed.
It is a film with heart and great for lovers of romance and Bollywood. It is modern but doesn't lose the zest of what Bollywood adds in emotions, colour and ability to suck you in. I cared about the characters and shed a tear in the sad section.
I really liked this one. However it can be slow in parts and some people find it far too slow. My co-watcher abandoned it first time round but watched it on my recommendation. She did end up enjoying it when she stayed the distance. She would have given it more a 3 1/2 though I think.
Two thumbs up for Salaam - e - ishq June 21, 2010 A. Y. Fernez (Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, USA) This is a very enjoyable and well made film. A really great cast and several different storylines make the 3 + hours go by quickly. The music is wonderful, too.
